Bhuj | Instrument - Ghadha Gambhira

Construction worker by day, torch bearer of a rare folk instrument by night – Meet Mohan, a maestro of The Gadha Gambhira –  This is one rare, unique instrument with equally unique mechanics, and the best way to enjoy its unique sound is to experience it in person.

Invented by the musicians of the local Bhuj community, the Gadha Gambhira is crafted by covering the mouth of a ‘matka’ (earthen pot) with leather and securing it with a rope. The magic happens when water is poured over the leather, and the matka is played in tandem with a steel vessel, the dancing of the water creating a fascinating rainbow of tones!
